As a monster truck crushes cars to the delight of onlookers at a free event at the Detroit Auto Show, visitors flock to take pictures of the Bigfoot 20, the world’s first electric monster truck.
The nearly five-ton Ford-built model is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year after being introduced to the public in 2012, and remains the only monster truck with a battery-powered electric motor to date. And it could stay that way for some time, according to monster truck driver Elliott Miller: “I don’t know if it necessarily has the potential to become a category of its own,” he tells AFP after crushing several cars in his gas-powered monster truck nicknamed “Sinistar.”
Electric vehicles or not, Detroiters appreciate the auto show’s return after a multi-year hiatus due to the pandemic: “I missed it. I’d been coming every year since I was about 13,” says 76-year-old Charlie Thornton Jr.
