Donovan Lewis, 20, died at dawn on Tuesday in Columbus, the capital of this northeastern state.
A video from the pedestrian camera of one of the officers, who had a warrant for his arrest, shows a police officer accompanied by a dog open the door of a room and then almost immediately shoot the young man who was in a bed.
An investigation has been launched and Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther has promise full transparency into the tragic death of Donovan Lewis.
The family will be filing a lawsuit, said the services of his attorney, Rex Elliott, without elaborating.
Mr. Elliott had denounced in a statement an excessive and absolutely unnecessary use of force.
Shot by shot, the video (of the pedestrian camera) reveals the truth: three white police officers accompanied by an aggressive dog from the dog squad shot an unarmed 20-year-old in cold blood as he was getting up in his bed in accordance with police orders, he said.
Contacted by AFP, the Columbus Police Department could not be reached immediately.
His boss, Elaine Bryant, was quoted by media outlets as saying that the officer fired when Donovan Lewis appeared to raise his arm and hold something in his hand. Only an electronic cigarette was found near him, she said.
Rallies are planned this weekend in Columbus to support the family, open a discussion about police brutality and demand justice for Donovan Lewis, Ramon Obey II of the social justice organization J.U.S.T. told AFP.
On Friday, students gathered on the Ohio State University campus, chanting Say his name: Donovan Lewis, according to photos and videos posted on Twitter.
The event is reminiscent of other deaths of black people during interactions with police, tragedies that sparked a major movement against racism and police violence in 2020.
