Kurt Cobain’s iconic guitar sold at auction for $5 million

The blue guitar played by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain in the video for the 1991 hit Smells Like Teen Spirit sold at auction Sunday for $5 million.
 
This while the expected price for this Mustang Fender should have been around 800,000 dollars. As for one of the artist’s cars, his 1965 Dodge Dart, it went for $375,000, reports Julien’s Auction House, which organized the sale. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to a mental health charity.
 
Many items belonging to other celebrities were also sold at auction. An acoustic guitar belonging to country singer Johnny Cash went for $437,500. Never before has a guitar belonging to this artist been sold for so much, according to the auction house.
 
Several items belonging to Madonna were also auctioned off. The Marilyn Monroe-inspired dress seen in the Material Girl video, for example, fetched $287,500 and a black silk dress she wore in an Instagram video went for $21,875. The lyrics of Born to Run, handwritten by Bruce Springsteen, were sold for $44,800.
 
A total of 1,300 items were auctioned off during the Music Icons Auction Event, which took place over three days at New York’s Hard Rock Cafe. It raised a total of nearly $15 million.
