Current U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris is officially the only candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in November, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) announced on Tuesday night. Aspirants had until midnight (local time) to make themselves known.
Democratic Party delegates will formally invest the former California Attorney General as their candidate in the race for the White House in a virtual vote to be held August 1-5, the DNC said.
The committee has pledged to present its presidential candidate by August 7, well before the Democratic convention to be held August 19-22 in Chicago.
The November 5 presidential election should therefore see the first South Asian woman elected to the Senate face off against Republican billionaire Donald Trump.
