United States: Liz Cheney, Trump’s sworn enemy, ejected from her seat in Congress

Sylvie Claire / August 17, 2022

U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney, a spokeswoman for anti-Trump Republicans, suffered a crushing defeat Tuesday in her Wyoming primary, cementing the former president’s influence over her party.

The 56-year-old congresswoman has been one of the Republican billionaire’s main pet peeves since she dared to join the parliamentary committee investigating his role in the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney even co-chairs this group of elected officials, for whom Donald Trump failed in his duty during the attack led by his supporters to try to prevent the certification of the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.

Donald Trump constantly denounces the work of this commission. For this reason, the 45th president of the United States had pledged to defeat Ms. Cheney, elected to the U.S. House of Representatives since 2017. He had put all his weight behind his rival Harriet Hageman, a 59-year-old lawyer with whom he went to campaign at the end of May, victorious in this Republican primary on Tuesday.

The Republican nomination in the election for the House of Representatives will therefore go to Donald Trump’s protégée, further strengthening the grip of the former tenant of the White House on the Republican party, despite the numerous investigations he is subject to. In Wyoming, a state that voted more than 70% for Donald Trump in the last presidential election, the candidate Harriet Hageman supports the theory promoted by the Trump clan that the 2020 election was stolen from the former president.
