A 48-year-old man was shot in the chest on Sunday by another passenger in the New York subway, various media reported. He succumbed to his injuries in hospital. The police are still looking for the perpetrator.

Police are convinced the attack was unprovoked. According to witnesses, the suspect was riding back and forth in the same train car, said Police Chief Kenneth Corey. Without any prompting, he pulled out a gun and shot the victim at close range. According to witnesses, there had been no interaction between the victim and his attacker up to that point.

Last April, New York was already shaken by a shooting in the subway. A man opened fire during the morning rush hour. Just before, he had put on a gas mask and thrown smoke bombs. Ten people were injured by the bullets and thirteen others in the panic that followed. There were no fatalities, however.

The perpetrator, Frank James, was arrested a day later thanks to information provided by New Yorkers.
